A Patient-Centered Philosophy

A Patient-Centered Philosophy

At The Family Birthplace of Vanguard Westlake Hospital, we’re dedicated to providing you with the most satisfying birth experience possible. We blend the comfort and intimacy of a home delivery with the safety of a modern hospital, so you’ll feel both comfortable and secure. We also believe in providing you with options so you’ll feel empowered to determine your own experience.

Facilities that Create the Feeling of Home

The Family Birthplace offers eight private birthing suites for labor, delivery and recovery as well as 16 private rooms for postpartum recovery. All rooms are designed to provide the feel of home while offering you and your baby the most modern medical care available.

Labor, delivery and recovery - Our eight birthing suites are beautifully appointed with tasteful fabrics, solid oak furniture and hardwood floors. Soft lighting provides a soothing effect to create a more relaxed mood and each room is equipped with a CD player. Every suite has its own large bathroom with private shower. Showers can be used for hydrotherapy during labor, which eases stress and discomfort, or to refresh after delivery. In addition, state-of-the-art birthing beds can be adjusted to provide maximum comfort during labor and optimal positioning during delivery.

Postpartum - After the birth of your baby, you’ll be able to bond with your child in one of 16 private postpartum rooms. Each has its own comfortable sleeping bed, private restroom, shower and free wireless Internet access.

Mothers are encouraged to keep their newborns with them throughout their stay. For those mothers who need extra help, or for newborns that require special care, we have a fully staffed and equipped Nursery that provides round-the-clock support.

Special Care - A registered lactation consultant also is available to work with all breastfeeding mothers.

Encouraging Family Participation

During labor and delivery, it’s important that mothers get the support they need from loved ones. Fathers are encouraged to participate during the entire labor and delivery to provide support and share in the joy of childbirth. Comfortable sleep chairs and sofas provide a convenient place for dad, a significant other, or family member to rest or sleep.

In addition, within guidelines, siblings and immediate family are welcome in the birthing room during labor. If family members are not present or available, our caring nursing staff will provide the needed support.

Special Services and Staff

We promote the family’s role as the primary caregiver for the newborn. In support of this, one nurse provides continuity of care for both mother and baby. Registered Nurses (RNs) are on staff 24 hours a day and are certified in neonatal resuscitation and CPR. Other staff and services include:

  • 24-hour Neonatology staff coverage
  • Surgical suite for emergency Caesarean birth
  • Surgical recovery room
  • Anesthesia services

Ensuring Your Safety

The Family Birthplace has taken special precautions to ensure your, and your baby’s, safety. Our infant security system requires that babies are identified in the labor and delivery room and banded prior to being removed. In addition, The Family Birthplace is in a secured wing with round-the-clock camera surveillance. Visitors must identify themselves prior to entry. Other precautions taken throughout our hospital are also taken at The Family Birthplace, such as emergency preparedness plans, patient call lights, etc.
