GI Procedures

  • Colonoscopy - Colonoscopy enables your physician to examine the entire lining of your colon for abnormalities using a colonoscope. If your physician thinks an area needs further examination, he will obtain a biopsy of the colon lining to be analyzed. If a polyp is discovered during the colonoscopy, your physician will most likely remove it during the procedure. Experts believe colonoscopy is the gold standard for detecting abnormalities.
  • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy - Sigmoidoscopy uses a lighted instrument to examine the rectum and lower colon. The examination can find precancerous and cancerous growths in these areas.
  • Upper Endoscopy -  Upper endoscopy allows your physician to examine the lining of the upper part of your gastrointestinal tract using an endoscope. The procedure can assist in evaluating symptoms of persistent upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or difficult swallowing. It is also effective in finding the cause of bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract and can be used to treat many abnormalities.
  • Endoscopic Ultrasonography - This procedure allows your physician to examine stomach lining as well as the walls of your upper and lower gastrointestinal tract. Using an endoscope with an ultrasound attachment, sound waves create visual high resolution images of the digestive tract.
  • Capsule Endoscopy - This procedure uses a non-invasive imaging device for the early detection and diagnosis of diseases in the small intestine. The patient swallows a small capsule that naturally glides through the GI tract and records thousands of images. Those images are transferred to a small recording device worn by the patient. During the procedure, the patient is free to go about his or her normal daily activities.
