About the Department of Internal Medicine
The MacNeal-Westlake Internal Medicine Residency Program accommodates 42 residents and it is based on a three-year curriculum. The primary teaching site is Westlake Hospital with rotations at West Suburban Medical Center and MacNeal Hospital. This combination of community hospitals provides the residents with a broad array of patients.
The MacNeal-Westlake Internal Medicine Residency Program is a dynamic one and our residents receive significant exposure in every area of internal medicine. We are able to respond to the needs of the individual and changes in the environment. Most subspecialty rotations now include office experience besides the traditional consultative hospital service. Rotations are conducted in: laboratory medicine, office gynecology, ophthalmology, ENT, dermatology, hospice and adolescent medicine, plus a three year continuity clinic emphasize the skills needed for the practice of medicine in today's environment.
Residents have the greatest responsibility possible both for patient care and for their education. We pride ourselves on superior and rigorous teaching that emphasizes academic and practical skills, and the compassionate application of science to the care of patients. Learning is enhanced by maintaining the primary role of the resident in patient management and by providing an intellectually rigorous setting that encourages inquiry and discourages dogma. The resident is a teacher and role model for the students from various medical schools.
Residents in our program are taking a journey that is preparing them for academic medicine, fellowship or private practice. This is done in an environment that encourages each person to develop the entire scope of his or her skills, both as a physician and as an individual.
